Chicken and egg thing

One of my fondest memories of the Early (Tomi) Years: your silent confusion about the expression "it's a chicken/egg thing." Back then, I told you what the expression meant in the context of a business conversation, but didn't answer the underlying question because I didn't think there was a definitive answer.
